“An Unpredictable Game Of Risk & Chance”

An extremely rare early print by Irving Penn is currently available on artnet Auctions. The piece, After Dinner Games, New York (1947), is a color photograph from a limited edition of 13 dye transfer prints of the image made between 1959 and 1960.

After Dinner Games, New York, by Irving Penn

Mary Buschman, Modern and Contemporary Art Specialist at artnet Auctions, describes the work as follows:

Like a Baroque vanitas, this work is laden with symbols that remind us of the transience of life; it says that we are all players in the game of life, an unpredictable game of risk and chance.

I couldn’t agree more about those sentiments in terms of life. *wink*

Auction estimate: $140,000–160,000.

Auction ends: Tuesday, May 22, at 10:45 a.m. (EST)

Preparing For The Preakness

Derby winner I’ll Have Another continues his Triple Crown quest on Saturday going for the $1 million Preakness Stakes. I must say, I do have a soft-spot for this horse and his jockey, Mario Gutierrez… It’s hard not to hope for a Triple Crown win for them both!

So much happiness -- and dirt! -- on those faces!

Not sure if I will bet though after the Union Rags fiasco, but my palms are itching to and my heart is invested, so if you were betting on what I’ll do, the good money is on me betting on I’ll Have Another. *wink*

Here are the odds — with horses listed by pole position:

1. Tiger Walk (30-1)
2. Teeth of the Dog (15-1)
3. Pretension (30-1)
4. Zetterholm (20-1)
5. Went the Day Well (6-1)
6. Creative Cause (6-1)
7. Bodemeister (8-5)
8. Daddy Nose Best (12-1)
9. I’ll Have Another (5-2)
10. Optimizer (30-1)
11. Cozetti (30-1)

Dancing With The Stars Finals

I’ll admit it; I was sweating out Tuesday’s results on DWTS. But Donald Driver prevailed — whew!

This was probably the most shocking results show of this year’s season. Not only had I expected William Levy to go (he has wowed many with his hot looks and passion, but he’s not as good as the other contestants), but I never expected Maria Menounos to go — especially as she had two nearly-perfect dances the night before!

Driver and partner Peta Murgatroyd are favored to win, which means I won’t win as much as I would with someone else — but I’ll be happy with the win just the same. *wink*

Have you made your bet yet?

When Solitaire Isn’t Solitary

In this antique photograph, it looks like the two women are playing Solitaire, but it could be some other game. They also look quite happy to be playing cards together — which is not at all how I look when someone joins me for a game of Solitaire. *wink* It’s even more annoying than having someone read over your shoulder because when it comes to cards, they can’t help themselves from giving advice or even reaching out to move a card. Ugh.

Go, Donald Driver, Go!

Things have been progressing on this season’s Dancing With The Stars pretty much as I predicted. Yes, Jaleel White left a bit earlier than I thought; and Melissa Gilbert wasn’t as great as I’d expected prior to the show starting. But now that we’re down to the final four, everyone’s there that ought to be.

I’m still routing for team Driver, but he needs some 10’s, Len! He’s been deprived too long — he’s earned it! (Driver’s proven himself so charming, that perhaps there’s some show biz in his post-football life?)

Here’s how the odds sit right now:

Donald Driver 7/4

William Levy 5/2

Katherine Jenkins 3/1

Maria Menounos 3/1

Horse Racing Art Auction

Auction action is a lot like gambling; you pick a winner and go up against others who want to win. Only this time, you’re the one who pays instead of getting paid. Unless you decide to resell the object. Art is often like that… Buy it now and hope it’s an investment with a payout after years of enjoying it. So in that sense, an art auction containing works with horse racing themes is nearly a trifecta.

Over at Inherited Values I read about Freeman’s Modern and Contemporary Art auction (to be held this Saturday, May 12, 2012) where I found two very simple and elegant — yet very different — horse racing works of art up for sale.

There’s a vintage Jacques Villion piece which bears the same title and compositional qualities to several paintings the artist made in 1921 and 1922 depicting horse racing and jockeys.

The other stand out is Raoul Dufy’s Les Courses A Deauville.

Aside from money, the question is, do I prefer angles or round curves?

Normally, this girl goes for curves, but the Jacques Villion work really speaks (or is that “whinnies”?) to me.

Men Can’t Resist Looking

One of the few times we know he’s only peepin’ at her cards — because that’s Maureen O’Hara with her brother James. *wink*

Messed Up Systems In Horse Racing

Writing about the Kentucky Derby last week really messed-up my system. Because I had fancied Union Rags’ name, I decided I should take that as my “gut” and bet on him; which you likely know by now was a bad choice. *wink*

However, it was a glorious and exciting race to watch — and there was the bonus of such an emotional jockey. I loved seeing Mario Gutierrez win in his derby debut — and loved seeing how much he appreciated the chance to ride and adored his horse even more. Something straight out of one of the old horse story books I’ve read!

The downside of all this, however, remains the fact that I didn’t stick with my system for picking the winners of horse races. But there’s still the Preakness.

So long as I don’t look at anything else online between now and then.

We’ll see how that goes…

But even more messed up than a horse-loving gambler’s superstitions, are these facts about the current state of horse racing.

It would be nice to pretend this isn’t real. To bury my head in the turf and just listen to the hoof-beats, or avert my eyes and just watch the gleaming coats of horseflesh. But that isn’t what a real horse lover ought to do. And it isn’t what a lover of horse racing or any gambler should do either. We need to be educated to the problems so that we can be part of the solutions — even if that means not patronizing, betting, or participating where the demons are.

Dames, Enter To Win A Glam $100 Shopping Spree

Lingerie blogger Slip of a Girl has a contest to win a $100 shopping spree at ShopBop. If I won, I’d blow the whole gift card on the Marlies Dekkers Dame De Paris Push Up Bra — because if that bra doesn’t scream, “Vacation!” for me and, “Distraction!” for others, I’m not sure what can. *wink*

Little Girls Love Horses; Dames Love The Derby

Even though I’ve never been to a running of the Kentucky Derby, this is a very special time of year for me. It begins, as most important things do, with early family memories…

I think every little girl grows up loving horses; those who do not are few and far between. Perhaps that’s why horse racing is one sport we women gravitate towards so early on. It’s not just the fancy hats and fashions. Horse racing seems like the perfect sport, melding the hearts and spirits of men with those of the majestic animals themselves.

Plus, no matter how long the race is, there’s not the mind-numbing boredom and/or nauseated dizziness of repeated noisy trips around the track of car racing.

I recall many summer afternoons spent with my family at county fairs and even smaller fairs and festivals with horse racing — usually harness races. The trotters and pacers.

Coloring Book by the United States Trotting Association

My parents, sister and I up in the bleachers, making bets on which horses would win. We knew nothing of what or how those horses had run before. If there was a program with any information or odds, it never meant anything to me. I fancied myself an expert, able to look at a horse, hear its name, see how it carried itself onto the track and into the gate, if there was one, and just “know.”

After all those Black Stallion books, I was virtually as horse savvy as Henry Dailey. Surely I had an eye for horses after studying all those C. W. Anderson illustrations. I figured all those years of reading horse books, of properly mounting and dismounting the chair on the back porch, that I’d be able to spot a good jockey who not only could ride, but who loved his horse enough to inspire a win.

And I must have learned something from my love of horses, for I still hold the family record for predicting the number of winning horses.

Once I discovered that you could watch The Derby on TV, it became my favorite thing about spring, surpassing Easter and spring break from school.

I’d rush to get my chores done early on the first Saturday in May, just to be certain I could watch the race. My parents would tease me how hard I’d work for just a few minutes of racing.

As I got older, I still kept Derby Day alive. I’d request that day off at work, schedule events around the run for the roses. That day was reserved for me and the horses, honoring them and nourishing my inner little girl.

Until I had my first child, that is.

Somehow parenting and life has gotten in the way, making me wince knowing I’d miss the Kentucky Derby.

But this year, the kids are each old enough to be doing their own thing — and I’ll be getting my chores done extra early so I can watch the horses carefully, pick my winner, and watch the race as breathless with excitement as when I was seven.

I’ve got to add to my 35% of picking Derby winners — which I still think is pretty good since I only watch them parade to the starting gate. (I think anything else is worse than cheating; it’s unnecessary.)

In a full field of 20 horses, there’s no clear favorite for this year’s Kentucky Derby. Bodemeister has been made the early favorite, at 4-1. Union Rags is the second choice, listed at 9-2. The undefeated Gemologist is the third favorite at 6-1. This leaves lots of longshots; Covers gives their top three picks. When you think you’ve spotted the winner, you can bet online here.

Obviously, this year writing the blog means I’ve looked at a few of the horses, but I will save my bet for those moment just before the race. (Though I do love the name Union Rags, and wasn’t he an adorable colt!)

A Two-Day Old Union Rags

This year’s Triple Crown schedule:

The 2012 Kentucky Derby will be held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on May 5.
The 2012 Preakness Stakes will take place at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Md., on May 19.
The 2012 Belmont Stakes will be hosted by Belmont Park in Elmont, NY., on June 9.
